Repetition by Peak Flow

The new single Repetition by UK Post Punk/ Synth duo Peak Flow is a brooding collision of post punk tension and synth lit melancholy.  It plays like the soundtrack to a relationship on repeat.  Bright synths offer brief moments of clarity before the guitars swallow them in static. The melody seems to keep reaching upward even as something darker coils beneath, mirroring a relationship stuck in the same snake like looping argument.

The synths try to soothe, but the undertow of noise keeps dragging everything back into the conflict.  Grinding textures meet razor like synth lines, creating a tension that never quite resolves.  It’s the sonic equivalent of two voices locked in the same old clash, with equal parts of desire and frustration.  Repetition seems to stalk forward on industrial grit and nostalgic neon hued hooks.  It ultimately sounds like two people beautifully and abrasively circling the same emotional drain.

Yellow Rose by Para Lia

“This is a song about the loss of a loved person, a very emotive track and an attempt to mirror the fragility of life in the song’s arrangement. Para Lia is joined here by two fantastic musicians – Fady Haddad from Baltimore, who provides beautiful synth parts and also joined us on our last album for two tracks. And Christian Georgi – a classical musician, who has been part of the staff at the Staatstheater Cottbus for many years – who plays the E-piano on this track.”

Para Lia

“Yellow Rose” from the Para Lia album In Clash With The Zeitgeist has gentle and subtle music elements that create a tender and introspective soundscape enhanced by delicate tender vocals.  The song is a captivating alternative composition which stands as a powerful testament to the power of music to touch our hearts and help us navigate the turbulent complexities of loss. The evocative melodies and introspective lyrics of “Yellow Rose” make the track an indelible addition to any playlist that is exploring the depths of human emotions.

Suburban Spell’s Bright Gold Cross

The new LP by Synth Electronica band Suburban Spell, Falling Down is described by the band as “expressly a statement on the vulnerabilities of the human condition, we all think we can take the high moral ground in our day to day to lives, we live primarily in safe and secure lives…yet we are all only a few sliding door moments away from all of this security falling away, something by choice, sometimes not”.

The new single from the LP Falling Down “Bright Gold Cross” is said by the band to “directly alludes to the long-lasting repercussions of poor decisions and having those absolved by the church when on death’s door…a get of jail free card, as it were.”

Delving into the themes of consequences and absolution, “Bright Gold Cross” is a provoking and emotive blend of electronic textures, with a beat that sets the tone for the contemplation of repercussions and redemption.  The compelling lyrics are poignant and the juxtaposition of them with the electronic musical elements seamlessly blend.   Expertly crafted music and a driving beat help provide intricate melodies and an engaging and immersive soundscape.

Dutch Dungeon Synth Band Nortfalke

                                                                        Image from Facebook

The band name Nortfalke represents an interest in the mysticism of the Middle Ages and “nature and dark energy”, according to the band.     Using the word Nort meaning North in the local official language of Schiermonnikoog, and Falke, the word for the falcon, Nortfalke is a name that expresses both the band’s Northern European culture, the winter and harshness of that season as well as the power and stature of a bird of prey.

With a grandfather that was a great local jazz pianist Nortfalke founder explains “I think he inspired me a lot to make music and get lost in the world of sounds”.  Having taken piano lessons from around seven years of age, by thirteen he was playing music in a band. By fifteen years of age he was performing Doom Metal and Black Metal.  Influenced by bands such as Norwegian Black Metal band Burzum and more recently non-commercial music styles such as the Berlin School and Krautrock.

“I am writing soundtracks for nature, at least this is how I see it” is how Nortfalke founder describes his music.  Finding endless inspiration in heavy clouds, the stormy sea and the forest by night, he also incorporates spirituality and mysticism into his music.  “There must be something hidden within the music.”  Inspired by old and obscure movies from the 70s and 80s, sword and sorcery movies such as “Hawk the Slayer” and “Conquest”, Nortfalke creator also cites French filmmaker Jean Rollin’s films as a source of inspiration.

The sophisticated ambient Dungeon Synth music created by Nortfalke involves “analogue synth bass or nice cosmic sequence, a big wide pad with a great strymon hall/delay”.  Once the first tones are heard Nortfalke finds the inspiration flows. Dutch recording engineer and musician  JB Van Der Wal has helped with the mixing of most of Nortfalke’s albums

When describing his creative process Nortfalke founder explains “First I get a global idea of the direction and atmosphere.” Once he has decided what synths to use he says “the magic happens”. Although he has endless inspiration time is always a limiting factor on how much he creates.

Nortfalke is very involved in the aesthetic and style of the music produced by the band.  “I did make the frames for the debut and made the artwork of Schijnsel by old school cut and paste.”  Nortfalke founder explains that he makes most of the band photographs himself .  For Seefonktjuenderee, Frank Verhulst did the band photo and helped out with some of the band’s artwork.  Several individuals have also helped bring aesthetic and artistic aspects of Nortfalke to fruition.

The joy of playing live music is enhanced for Nortfalke by meeting new people and catching up with old friends.  “My music is very layered so it's not possible to re-create it exactly like on the record” explains Nortfalke founder and this as well as technical difficulties can cause some stress but playing live allows Nortfalke to visit new places and go out beyond the recording studio.

Having just completed a tour with Swiss Extreme metal group Bölzer,  Nortfalke’s future plans involve making more records,  “I hope to create music like this for a long time.”  While currently working on a spiritual, ambient album Nortfalke also plans to create a Berlin School or Krautrock style album.  Nortfalke has lots of future ideas including “a total old school ds album” and “an album with only casio’s” as well as album “without synths but with other instruments such as piano and organ.”  A film score is also a future ambition of Nortfalke.  In the near future Nortfalke will be featured on an upcoming compilation of Dutch Dungeon Synth via Heidenshart Records with other bands such as Old Tower and Vetus Supulcrum.

For those who have never listened to any of Nortfalke’s music the band suggests “take your time to listen to it, you really need time to get into it.”  Nortfalke founder says “I make music for myself” but “if others like it that’s a big bonus.”   If you enjoy stylish ambient Dungeon Synth music with a provocative spiritual twist Nortfalke are for you.

Voicecoil

Denver based Futurepop act Voicecoil has a name inspired by a component of a speaker that band founder Mark Sousa describes as “something we all use to consume music and other media”.  The component is basically used to convert an electrical signal to the vibration that we actually hear through our electronics.  The unique name popped into Sousa’s head when he was trying to come up with a name for the project to release their first songs.  Thinking the name Voicecoil was perfect for his needs Sousa ended up making it one word to make it stand out and simplify searching for the project.

ComprI sing of Sousa and at times, during live performances, various live line-ups ranging from one or two keyboard players, a guitar player and even a drummer at one point, Voicecoil now consists of Sousa and a keyboard player on stage.  Although Sousa admits he “would love to find a drummer if the right one came along.”

With music that centers around Pop/Dance compositions that have a traditional Pop song structure, Voicecoil admits the band doesn’t get too deep into the music genre game.  Sousa acknowledges that his “music is synth based and Poppy but has lots of dark theme. People will call it what they like.”

The creative process of Voicecoil can vary at times.  Sometimes Sousa is inspired by a chord progression he likes that he can build a song around and on occasion a synth sound will inspire him to create a melody around it.  Even inspired by his dreams Sousa admits that now and then he hears musical ideas in a dream and he “wakes up to try and bring them into the real world.”  This either results in something sounding close to what he heard in his dream or sometimes it doesn’t.  It’s a haphazard process.

Sousa does all the artwork for Voicecoil and though he says he isn’t a graphic artist he creates what he describes as “simple, minimalistic artwork” a style that has always appealed to Sousa.   He explains that he is “severely vision impaired and so things like contrasts and form are very important to me as that is generally how I view the world around me.”

Sousa enjoys playing in front of a live audience and relishes the thrill of connecting with people that are into something he created.  “Songs can sound different live and that’s always interesting to see how they translate”  Sousa says.  Touring also allows Sousa to travel and see new places which he enjoys.  When describing performing live Sousa explains  “when the lights are going and the music is loud and people are dancing, you can lose yourself in a moment and the only thing that matters is the moment you are in.”

Despite touring having become more difficult for smaller acts due to the pandemic and financial stresses, Voicecoil would like to tour again soon. There are many places all over the world that Sousa would like to travel to and perform in. He hopes that someday soon he will be able to perform in Germany, the country he was born in.

Sousa believes that Voicecoil’s music will progress organically.  He also started working on a side project called Gravity Corp which is more aggressive and angry music, something Sousa hasn’t explored as much.  Sousa wants the listeners and fans to know that every little bit of support shown towards a band is appreciated and is important even purchasing things like T-shirts or buying an album on Bandcamp.  Sousa says that this kind of fan support goes “beyond keeping them creating and keeping our culture going, it also usually helps keep the lights on and keeps people fed.”

To a new listener Sousa simply suggests they listen to the music and make their own judgement.  “Art is so incredibly subjective” says Sousa.

“Bloom” by CARV.R

Representing a celebration of progress for musician Cristian Carver of CARV.R the instrumental track  “Bloom” is indicative of his successful foray into production.  Fraught with possibilities “Bloom” immerses the listener into an atmospheric soundscape representing a fast paced night city emblazoned with neon.  The track was created to inspire thoughts of “a sonic environment that would capture someone walking into a “Night City” for the first time” according to Carver.

An odyssey into a darker genre with enthralling combinations of synths “Bloom” takes the listener on a melodic expedition traversing a surreal electronic night city, drawing the listener deeper into a gritty neon maelstrom.  There is a sanguine air to the track that delivers the listener to a place of growth and things to be learned in this symphonic journey.  “Bloom” is a wondrous, euphonious trip well worth taking.
